Angela Nguku is the Founder and Executive Director of the White Ribbon Alliance Kenya. A passionate Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, and Adolescent Health (RMNAH) champion, Ms. Nguku’s career spans over 15 years of dedicated work towards ending preventable maternal and newborn deaths globally and amplifying the voices of marginalized and vulnerable populations in Kenya, throughout Africa, and globally. A graduate midwife and an accomplished thought leader, Ms. Nguku combines her influencing and negotiation skills in advocating for the accountability for RMNAH. She serves on the Advisory Board of the Lancet Global Health Commission on High Quality Health Systems in the SDGs Era, as well as on Advisory Groups for the Global Action Plan for Healthier Lives and Well Being and the Deliver for Good Campaign in Kenya. As a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation 2018 Goalkeeper she has written various articles on the need to invest in citizens in shaping the RMNAH agenda, why quality healthcare – defined by women and girls’ self-expressed needs – matters in the UHC era, why investing in frontline health workers and PHC is a best practice, and why COVID-19 response should not overshadow RMNAH care among others. She additionally serves in the steering committee for National CSOs Advocacy Funding.

The session will be cocreated by MSD for Mothers and MSD Global Vaccine Public Policy teams with the aim of highlighting the challenges specific to and the innovative solutions to address health disparities. The session will bring together the perspectives of key stakeholders that include local private sector in the health space, government, development partners and representatives from local communities. As partners, we reflected on funding models and their impact. In these sessions, key lessons and experiences on the donor – Women’s Rights Organisations relation were shared. First, we established that centering local WROs is fundamental as they understand the realities of women and girls. The current funding practice that is restricted, short term and reflects donor priority is inadequate. Secondly, the localization agenda is being circumvented as donors and international organisations (INGOs) with origins and presence in the Global North rush to register local entities, open offices or form unequal consortia – relations with local actors. In this regard, campaign partners will share these reflections on the need for women-led and feminist organisations to be trusted while remaining accountable and make the case for trust-based funding models that truly centre women-led and feminist organisations with local origins and the presence to thrive.
