The Global Fund to fight HIV, Tuberculosis and Malaria

Rukia Männikkö is an international professional- investor and innovator in social impact projects, and philanthropic initiatives. Originally from Kenya, she is based in Geneva, working with The Global Fund, as regional advisor on addressing gender and human rights barriers and strengthening community responses to ensure increased access to health services in Africa and Middle East. Her achievements include set up and coordination of the Global Fund AGYW program; set up and management of women and girls funds co-funded with private sector philanthropy: Her Voice Fund. She continues to shape policies and legal reforms and serves in Boards.

As partners, we reflected on funding models and their impact. In these sessions, key lessons and experiences on the donor – Women’s Rights Organisations relation were shared. First, we established that centering local WROs is fundamental as they understand the realities of women and girls. The current funding practice that is restricted, short term and reflects donor priority is inadequate. Secondly, the localization agenda is being circumvented as donors and international organisations (INGOs) with origins and presence in the Global North rush to register local entities, open offices or form unequal consortia – relations with local actors. In this regard, campaign partners will share these reflections on the need for women-led and feminist organisations to be trusted while remaining accountable and make the case for trust-based funding models that truly centre women-led and feminist organisations with local origins and the presence to thrive.
