Violence against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex (LGBTIQ) people is a staple of many armed conflicts, but is rarely acknowledged by governments and global institutions. Persecution based on sexual orientation and gender identity in conflict settings remains largely invisible at the Security Council and in atrocity prevention efforts, peacebuilding processes, and international justice. Featuring activists from Colombia and Afghanistan who are engaged in peace and security work with LGBTIQ communities in their own countries, this session will offer recommendations for a gender-transformative approach to the peace and security agenda, one that recognizes the root causes of violence against both women and LGBTQ people of all genders and fully integrates their voices and experiences.
