Neela Ghoshal is Senior Director of Law, Policy, & Research at Outright International. Neela oversees Outright’s Queer Legal Futures, United Nations, Global Trans Rights, LBQ Connect, and research programs. She frequently speaks and writes about ipeace, security, and humanitarian access for LGBTIQ people, repressive legislation, and gender liberation. Neela was previously with Human Rights Watch as Associate LGBT Rights Director and as a researcher in the Africa Division. Neela holds a bachelor’s degree in social justice studies from the University of Michigan and a master’s degree in international relations from Yale University. She lives in Washington, D.C., USA.

Persecution based on sexual orientation and gender identity in conflict settings remains largely invisible at the Security Council and in atrocity prevention efforts, peacebuilding processes, and international justice. Featuring activists from Colombia and Afghanistan who are engaged in peace and security work with LGBTIQ communities in their own countries, this session will offer recommendations for a gender-transformative approach to the peace and security agenda, one that recognizes the root causes of violence against both women and LGBTQ people of all genders and fully integrates their voices and experiences.
