Ryan Borcherding (he/him) is Head of Methodology and Training at Theatre for a Change (TfaC) UK. Prior to joining TfaC in 2006, Ryan was a professional actor and writer in Hollywood. Through TfaC, Ryan has led the set-up of health, rights and justice-focused theatre and radio drama projects in 15 countries across Africa and Asia with partners like UNICEF and Google. Ryan is a graduate of the School of Theatre, Film and Television at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and conducted post-graduate studies on intercultural arts at Jiaotong University in Shanghai, China.

The session will take Read More This session will provide a practical introduction to Theatre for a Change’s unique approach for promoting gender equality and social change. The session will take participants through a series of physical, participatory activities designed to explore unequal power dynamics in relationships, how these link to gender inequality and poor sexual and reproductive health, and how these dynamics can be shifted through conscious changes in the use of one’s voice, body and space. The approach prioritises and amplifies the realities of participants’ experiences and is particularly impactful when working with participants who have been denied a voice due to their gender, social position, geography, disability etc. By the end of the session, participants should have a better understanding of, and appreciation for, the role that drama-based approaches can play in bringing about deep and lasting change in people’s lives.
